Unilateral Training:
What is it and why do you need to know about it? If you’re like me and get overwhelmed by the seemingly endless amount of information coming at you, don’t worry - this is most likely not a new concept for your body. In fact, if you are taking classes on our platform or IRL, you are already practicing unilateral training! Ok, phew, right?! Here are a few reasons why you should keep up the good work and consider one of our standing classes for your next workout!
In a nutshell, unilateral training is a type of physical training that relies on the use of one-sided and bodyweight exercises, such as single-leg squats and single-arm presses. It’s a great way to challenge your muscles, and is super beneficial to the body in a variety of other ways:
1. Increased Core Strength – By encouraging your body to support itself with one side, you will need to engage your core muscles more than you would with traditional two-sided exercises. In other words, bonus core work!
2. Improved Balance and Coordination – As you perform one-sided exercises, your body will be forced to learn how to balance on one side and remain stable. This improved balance and coordination will help you with everyday activities, in addition to more advanced exercises
3. Enhanced Athletic Performance – By working on one side of your body at a time, you’ll be creating a stronger and more balanced muscle structure which will allow you to perform at a higher level
4. Notice Imbalances in the Body – Isn’t there always one side that feels harder to balance on? And a side that feels tighter? Or maybe a side where you struggle to feel the exercise at all? It’s good to take note of those imbalances so that you can address them before they lead to injury.
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you in class!
